Alison: You’re listening to the how to podcast series of podcasts, a mini series under the umbrella of the Pod Bites podcast.

I’m your host Alison Fraser.

This episode we’re going to delve into the equipment you need to get started plus what you might want to invest in as you progress.

I will have links showing you where you can buy these items in the shownotes.

First off, you don’t actually need to spend a lot of money to get started. You don’t need to hire out a podcast studio or buy audio mixing machines.

My very first podcast I recorded into my voice memo app on my phone and I still do that occasionally.

So long as the room you’re in is small enough you don’t even need to think about using a microphone or headphones, but they may help.

Take your phone and find your voice memo app. Record test audio to see what the sound is like without any accessories.

Try it out with your phone at various distances away from your mouth.

If you find you need a microphone use a pair of earphones that have a microphone inbuilt.

The next item I use in my podcasting is a microphone, which I connect to my laptop via USB. I have a Yeti microphone, this is about 120 pounds from amazon, I got mine as a Christmas present.

When I use this microphone I plug in my son’s headphones so I reduce the risk of any sound distortion, such as feedback. They’re a pretty cheap pair of over ear headphones with a jack that I plug into my laptop. You can use any type of headphone for this, whatever is most comfortable and affordable for you. They can be plug in or wireless.

I have also recorded episodes using a Jabra headset, which is a pair of over ear headphones and a microphone. This plugs into a USB socket.

So far we’ve mentioned using your phone and the default voice memo app, a microphone and headphones when using a laptop or other computer.

This is all you need.

I do my podcasting wherever I can with this set up as it’s very portable. So long as I have a quiet room - and no interruptions - I can record away.

If you have a space that you will commit to podcasting in, such as a home office, you can think about upgrading to microphones that hang over your computer screen or more expensive wireless headphones.

But you can save your money and spend it on something else.

So that’s a run down on what equipment you need to get started. Take a photo fo your podcasting set-up and share in my free facebook group, pod bites pod collective.

In the next episode I will go through the tech and how you get your podcast into the world.

Let me know what you would love to learn about podcasting, I’ve a membership where I help time-pressed mums get started on their podcast and keep it going by making things as simple as possible.
